MT. POCONO, PA (May 28, 2017) – The Mt. Pocono Rotary sponsored its 22nd Annual Community Aviation Day Fly-In Drive-In Breakfast on Sunday, May 28 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm with proceeds benefitting Mt. Pocono Rotary and the Monroe County Special Olympics. For the past 22 years the event has been held rain or shine at Pocono Mountains Airport on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. Mark Turner, Event Co-Chair, comments, “Each year we try to add to the day’s events that include the pancake breakfast, airplane and helicopter rides, children’s activities and military, public safety and car displays. We also had a parachute jump that followed our tribute to Veterans.”

Tickets for the all you can eat breakfast were $10.00 for adults and $6.00 for children 12 and under. The day’s activities included free airplane rides for children ages 8-17 donated by the Young Eagles EAA program, the presenting of the Colors and American flag parachute demonstration, aircraft, antique cars and military equipment displays, a 50/50 benefitting Monroe County Special Olympics, the Pocono Raceway pace car, children’s activities and a Memorial Day Ceremony.

Turner continues, “This event was created over 21 years ago to give people the chance to come to the airport, see the airplanes, experience helicopter and airplane rides, and generally find out about how to get youth involved with aviation. It has grown to be one of the Mt. Pocono Rotary’s largest annual fundraisers with over $130,000 raised that was distributed to non-profit and deserving causes throughout the community. Last year a portion of proceeds benefitted Monroe County Special Olympics to support athletes competing on a State and National level.”

Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sport. The athletes of Special Olympics -- nearly 20,000 strong in Pennsylvania -- are constant reminders of all that is right with the human spirit. The mission of Special Olympics PA is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community. All training and competition opportunities are provided free of charge to the athletes and their families, enabling everyone to experience the benefits of Special Olympics that extend well beyond the playing field.

In addition to free airplane rides for children ages 8-17 donated by volunteers for the Young Eagles EAA Program, airplane and helicopter rides can be purchased with income benefitting the charities. Those rides are donated by event sponsors Moyer Aviation, Hi-Tech Helicopters and Papillon Moyer Excavation. Sponsors for the event included Bailey’s, Shop Rite and Smuggler’s Cove as a lead sponsor for their food donation, Adams Outdoor for billboards, Sky’s the Limit for the parachute demonstration, and Bushkill Group for signage and printed materials. Turner concludes, “We are offering sponsorships and ads in our new program booklet that will be distributed to our attendees. We welcome area businesses to join us in raising money for Monroe County Special Olympics.”

Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport is located on Rt. 611 north of Mt. Pocono, PA. The event is held rain or shine. Advance tickets can be purchased at RotaryFlyInBreakfast.com or call 570-839-7161.
